IPV6 - The Solution To Internet Address Space
While the internet seems to be becoming increasingly popular every day, there is one problem about which common man is not aware of yet. All computers need an IP address to communicate. Unfortunately, as IP penetration increases, the address space is fast diminishing. It is imperative to increase this space so that internet expansion does not stop on its tracks due to lack of addresses. This is where IPV6 standards have been designed. The aim is to increase the address space for all present and future needs.
The IPv4 addressing scheme that is currently being used is based on dotted decimal concept. With the IPV4 there are four octets of eight bits and they are represented as A. B. C. D. Each of these octets can have decimal values from 0 to 255. Thus there can be as many as 4.3 billion addresses.
For a common man this should suffice all the present needs. Unfortunately, not all the addresses are available to everyone. Many of them are reserved for special purposes and there is a much smaller space actually available for regular use. This coupled with the large number of devices connecting to the internet daily, the exhaustion of this address space is imminent.
Of course, this is not a new problem. This issue was identified long time ago and many interim band aid solutions have been proposed and implemented. Some of the more popular ones are the CIDR, NAT and DHCP solutions. All these solutions help reuse the existing address space in some manner to ensure that the shortage is not felt in near future. However, these solutions are not sustainable.
The only real long term solution to this address space exhaustion problem is to increase it. Reusing the addresses does not increase the absolute number of addresses; it just gives a false feeling that there are more addresses than there really are. A solution like the IPV6 will increase the real address space which will help solve this problem.
The IPV6 uses a 128 bit address field unlike 32 bit one in IPV4. This gives several billions of addresses which will meet the present and future needs. With each device getting its own IP address, there will be more transparency in the internet.
In summary, IPV6 is a perfect successor to IPv4. It is a simple solution which solves problems, not just in this generation but also the future generations to come behind us. All stakeholders are just waiting for the right moment to make this switch for the smooth transition.
